Care & Clean Your Silver Jewelry

In this blog post, I’m sharing simple tips to help keep your sterling silver jewelry from tarnishing too quickly, as well as gentle, natural ways to clean and care for it.

Why do silver jewelry pieces tarnish?

The skin’s reaction when it comes into contact with silver jewelry. Cleaning products, chlorine, contact with hairspray and perfume, hot tubs, and exposure to high humidity such as in the bathroom can all contribute to tarnishing. When you are not wearing your jewelry, to protect it from oxidation, store it in a small airtight plastic bag such as a “Ziploc.” The oxygen in the air also promotes the oxidation of sterling silver.

Cleaning your silver jewelry naturally. Method for delicate jewelry with pearls and gemstones

  1. You can use the small cleaning cloth I gave you at the time of purchase for jewelry with or without a black patina.

  2. Or, mix warm water with dish soap (that contains neither ammonia nor phosphate). Dip a soft cloth into the soapy water and gently clean the silver jewelry.

  3. Afterward, rinse the jewelry with clean water, then dry and polish it with a clean cloth.

Electrolyte method

  1. You will need about one tablespoon of baking soda, coarse salt, and boiling water.Use a shallow dish lined with aluminum foil, with the shiny side facing up.

  2. Place the jewelry in the center of the dish and sprinkle it with baking soda and coarse salt, then pour the boiling water into the dish beside the jewelry.

  3. Stir the solution to dissolve the baking soda and salt. For the desired reaction to occur, let the solution sit for 5 to 10 minutes.

  4. Meanwhile, you can gently rub the jewelry with your fingers or a small soft-bristle brush and move the solution around.

  5. Remove the jewelry and rinse it with warm water. Then gently dry it using a soft, non-abrasive cloth.

If your jewelry has stones, make sure they can safely be cleaned with this method without being damaged. This mixture is very gentle for most stones EXCEPT PEARLS. If you are unsure, please check first.

In conclusion, the best tip to keep your silver jewelry shiny is simply to wear it! The natural friction created while wearing it helps prevent the surface from darkening.
